Welcome to 'With Painted Words'

With Painted Words is a monthly, online literary magazine. It was founded in September 2009 and our first issue was released on October 31, 2009.

The way that With Painted Words works is slightly different from other magazines; every month a new image is chosen as a prompt and, for that month, all submissions must have used it as their inspiration – no matter how slight, vague or metaphorical it is there must be some form of link between the image and the work.

If you want to submit a story, poem or artwork, visit the submissions page for full guidelines. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Thanks to our lovely readers we were voted #14 in the 2009 and #10 in the 2010 Preditors and Editors Poll at Critters (http://www.critters.org).

December 2012 - Inspirational Image

Encroaching by Maggie Barra The December 2012 submission period sees an image from Maggie Barra

Maggie Barra is a fantasy artist and Illustrator living in Lake Oswego in the state of Oregon I am inspired by the magical ivy covered woods and misty pacific coastline.

She couldnt imagine a place on this earth without her magical worlds. A world without the wee folk and the realm of Faerie is just nowhere she could imagine or want to be.

To create their world is to breath.

Thank you all for taking the time to view my art and hope one is accepted. One way can be learned by starting to see the magic in everything. Sometimes it seems to be hiding but it is always there. The more we can see the magic in one thing a tiny flower, a mango, someone we love, then the more we are able to see the magic in everything and in everyone.

Where does the lavender field stop and the sky begin?

About Us

ISSN 2042-3543
Publisher: Four Parts Press
Place of publication: UK

Simply put this is a creative writing site that puts the adage, "a picture paints a thousand words" to the test. The premise is that, each month, an image will be given as a visual prompt and you will have up to one thousand words to tell the story that you are inspired to write ... using your imagination as the canvas and language as your brush.

We are open to submissions of artwork to inspire stories and stories inspired by the artwork - how very Ouroboros of us!
