We Are Life

by Harmony Hodges

Marchers walked

By the millions

Right past

The tree of life

Until it burst an aortic valve

Located deep underground

in its roots

The dead of winter arrived

predictably

as did bigger crowds

Crimson pools

surged upward

through an icy crust

and formed a multitude

of vibrant origami flowers

So delicate, so beautiful

So numb

Until

plucked by protesters

they were held up high

as the protesters chanted

"We are life, we are life, we are LIFE!"
