I Am Flightless Wings

by A.J. Huffman

Dreaming of the air

that will break my cursed stagnance.

I wake to walking,

a nightmare continuing in the light.

My feet become as bloody as my mind

until I emerge myself in a field of feathers.

The cawing of my brethren soothe my wounds

but not my soul.  I cover myself in their discarded

plumage, but this camoflauge

of comfort is only temporary.  I close my eyes

and pray for a tomorrow void of mocking

skin or clouds.
