A Little Lore

by JD DeHart

Perhaps an ode

to Neil Gaiman, brush

with an aged anthology,

journey down a classic

My students ask why

our stories so often

end in death.

I tell them that is the mortal

plight or curse.  The noble

or simple human position.

A raven perched

on the shoulder or

nocturnal creature nictating

with golden eyes.

Be safe, take your time,

get to the anchor point

of the page.
