Our Nature

by Devon Balwit

As when it was my turn to bake

the communion loaf and I failed

to see the weevils in the flour

until after, back at home, appalled,

hoping none noticed, in the shared

moment of partaking of the Body

of Christ, the wiggling grubs,

this cabbage on the market table

cups green leaves around a secret,

that which, in all of us, is pestilential.
