Mumma Tried

by Andrea Staum

Mumma tried her best to be a good mumma

She lost her way some time ago

Her youth had been stolen and she wanted to reclaim it

I was collateral loss

Mumma used to make the best birthday cakes

Parties were planned with balloons and streamers

Pretty packages wrapped and Mickey Mouse banner hung

Eventually that was too much work

Mumma tried but she had other things to do

She had eighteen years raising Sis

What more was there really for her

Ten was enough of me

Mumma would have the weekends

Left alone in the strange apartment I waited

The fridge empty except for the six pack

I raised myself just fine

Mumma tried to be there when I called

Finding a sober driver became the problem

She’d be there at the bus stop waiting sometimes

I’d walk right by her because I was done

Mumma found another husband

Sis and I couldn’t stand the reception and left

Mumma moved farther away

I was out of school, what did I need her for

Mumma tried to apologize

It was fifteen years too late

Damage done but life moves forward

I just have to cut away the scar tissue
